Tips for Portraits and Posing
(These rules can also be broken with great results!)
|
Posing for the camera can feel unnatural, but with a few tips you can “work it” like a high fashion supermodel ;-) We promise we won’t bite and neither will our cameras. Don't worry about any "bad" photos of yourself, it's always easy for us to hit the erase button! Try to relax in front of the camera, taking a deep breath can really help. Don’t over smile, just a nice friendly relaxed smile works great. Pretend you’re having coffee or a beer with your best friend. Turn your body and or shoulders at an angle to the camera, head-on shots make the body look larger. When standing your weight should be on your back foot and your front leg slightly bent with feet angled slightly to the camera. If your hand is in your pocket pull it out slightly to show the cuff. If you find yourself squinting from bright light we may ask you to open your eyes as wide as you can. Then relax and we snap the picture. If we need to shake things up we might ask you to look away and then look back at the camera. |

Wear nice fitting clothes with similar solid colors, nothing with stripes, plaid, polka dots or logos. Don’t worry about matching too much, but try to look like you’re on the same team. Cover your elbows and knees at least for adults. Most people's knees and elbows don't photograph well and will become distracting in a portrait. In larger family portraits try to group within your significant others. It’s also important to get your heads close together for the shot, so please lean in! This really makes for a friendlier looking pose. In large group portraits it can be tough to avoid having someone blink. To get everyone on the same page we may ask everyone to close their eyes. Then when we say, “Open!” we can get the picture. Bring hair brushes and your makeup if you think you might need them. |

Make sure they’re rested and fed. Bring their favorite toys but hide them until it’s time to take pictures. It’s great to catch them by surprise! For something different bring huge clothes, shoes, ties, and hats for small children. This can be very cute! |

Brides should hold the bouquet at waist height with some separation of the fingers. Use good posture with elbows out from body and hands to your waist if you’re not holding anything. Tilt your head at a different angle than the shoulders. Remember to moisten your lips periodically. Show the sides of your hands, not the backs. You can also raise your wrists slightly to add a gently curving line where the wrist and hand join. Try not to pose with your hands straight at your sides, remember, elbows out. It can also be nice to give some shape to your body by creating an “S” shape to your form. Feel free to get creative and even try some dramatic or crazy poses. We’re open for anything. A lot of times it’s the unusual pose that makes for the best photographs. We like to have fun too, so relax and together we’ll get photos you’ll treasure forever. |
